Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that Porter’s sixth birthday, which happened in full quarantine lockdown could be this amazing. The best part was that the ladies at Pipoca Events designed all of the decorations so I avoided turning into a stressed-out party momma, mostly. 😘

Super Mario Birthday Party Decorations

Pipoca Events specializes in creating upcycled decorations. Using recycled cardboard, paint, paper mache and a ton of creativity and passion, they turned our entire home into a magical Super Mario world for Porter to celebrate turning six. Which definitely took the sting out of having his sisters be his only party guests. Bloody covid. 🤦‍♀️

Kid Friendly Charcuterie

My new party motto is, pile it all on a charcuterie board and call it done. This gorgeous board was a gift from my friends at West Coast Wood Lab, a local Vancouver company.

Super Mario Birthday Party Activities

DIY Painting Party

Porter loves all things art so we stocked up on some fresh paints, brushes, canvases and palates from the dollar store to create our own paint party.

Matt and I used Art Hub on YouTube to each create a Super Mario-themed piece of art for his bedroom and the kids free-styled.

Super Mario Themed Scavengar Hunt

Matt earned some super Dad and Husband points and created the most amazing Super Mario-themed scavenger hunt for the family, complete with Yoshi Eggs and a bonus level!! I almost lost my mind when I found out he had a bonus level. Isn’t it bizarre the things that become sexy once you become a parent? 🤔

I’m not sure who had more fun with this? The kids and I, or Matt watching us all try and solve his clues. The clues were hidden all over the house and in the garden, so it was a great way to burn off some energy.

I will share the clues and exactly how we set up the scavenger hunt in another post. Coming soon.

Super Mario Photo Props

Thanks to Pipoca Events the house was filled with adorable photo ops but this custom Mario photo prop was next level.

Super Mario Themed Dessert Bar

My goal was to keep the decorating to a minimum for this party, so I felt like an evil genius when I had the idea for this super simple (somewhat, un-food safe) cake topper.

Easy DIY Super Mario Cake Topper

I made the Super Mario cake topper by cutting the image of Mario out of one of Porter’s toy boxes and tapping it to a skewer. Done and done! He was thrilled and it was very on theme with our upcycled event. You’ll never look at your kid’s toy boxes the same again. 😜

Super Mario Star Power Sugar Cookies

You can find my go-to sugar recipe here. I used a glaze and coloured it yellow so that I could quickly dip each cookie. Once the glaze was dry I added the eyes with leftover icing from the cake that I dyed black.

In an attempt to not become a crazed party momma during party week, I baked the star cookies ahead of time and froze them until closer to party time. Just make sure you put a layer of parchment between each layer of cookies and they will freeze like a dream.

Super Mario Themed Cake Pops and DIY Display Stand

Personally, I believe cake pops are the devil to make, so I whipped these babies up with a quick call to a local bakery called Hansel & Gretal.

The stand is made using styrofoam that I wrapped in kraft paper to match the Mario theme. I’ve used these same pieces of styrofoam since Maddie’s first birthday. I just wrap them differently for each theme. Don’t lose it, reuse it! Yes, I just quoted Rubble. 🤷‍♀️

Custom Birthday Boy Party Shirt

There is nothing that makes my heart happier than when party-goers dress on the theme. A tradition I started on Porter’s second birthday is ordering a custom shirt with his name and age. They always end up becoming his most worn shirts of the year.
